When we think about the future, we always imagine a technological utopia, where we fly with our cars, have even better gadgets, work with quantum computers, and much more.

As a culture, we also think that scientifically we are a very advanced society and that most of the stuff that’s been unknown before the 20th or 21st century is already known and there are just small bits and pieces left to complete that huge puzzle.

But…

There is a huge elephant in the room that nobody wants to look at. And that is the fact that psychologically, we are not…

Nowadays, specializations in various fields get more and more narrow. We, as employees and creative workers, are used to being labeled as something. We consider ourselves either as software developers, designers, artists, teachers, or whatever. Then we limit ourselves to only that field, even though we might have interests outside of that label that we are afraid to explore. And we think that’s pretty normal and that’s how things should be.

But let’s consider other alternatives.

Let’s go back to 15th century Italy, Florence in particular. There was a man known as Leonardo da Vinci, which is considered as one…

A new year is a new chapter for many people. We wait very eagerly for the next year to come, hoping that it will bring new and exciting possibilities. We can call that a “New year, new me” mindset. But think about it, what it is that actually changes? Why do you hope that something will be different because the earth completed its next usual circle around the sun?

In one of his interviews, a great stand-up comedian and actor Steve Martin says something according to which I’ve been trying to live my life for a couple of years now, from the time I first heard it from him. His saying goes like this:

“Be so good they can’t ignore you”.

When you feel depressed, sad, and all the other negative emotions or you feel fear, or even when you feel excited, do you realize that all those emotions are somehow connected to the past or the future? For example, you fear that something bad is gonna happen to you tomorrow or some other time, or you feel sad because you mistreated somebody you love last week, etc.

You might ask, yeah…

When we look at reality, we think that what we see out there is what’s really there. But have you ever considered otherwise? What if most of the things you ascribe to other people are coming from you? What if you are the one doing the actual work of giving negative or positive meanings and values to outer objects? If that is true, do you realize the implications that entails?

Imagine that you are watching a movie in a cinema and you notice a huge black stain on the screen. You’ll probably realize that the screen itself is not faulty…

We all want to be better versions of ourselves and some of us are constantly trying to improve different aspects of our lives. But if you have tried that, you might have noticed that it’s very difficult to make a lasting change. Most often what happens is that you make some changes, and then, a couple of days, weeks, months or even years later, you find yourself acting your old ways, you are again just like you used to be, and you think that nothing has changed.

If that happens a couple of times within your life, you might sit…
